"To move freely, you must be deeply rooted." — Bella Lewitt
Gabriela Hearst is a luxury women’s and men’s ready-to-wear and accessories collection, built on the principles of timelessness, uncompromising quality and sustainability.
Born in Uruguay, Gabriela grew up on her family’s 17,000-acre ranch, Santa Isabel in Paysandu, surrounded by horses, cattle and sheep, where the notion of luxury meant things were beautifully crafted and made to last. “There’s this idea that nothing can go to waste when you’re in a remote area,” she says. “You’re always thinking twice and repurposing everything.”
Gabriela left Uruguay for New York in 2003, bringing with her an appreciation for possessions with purpose and tradition over trend. After more than a decade in design, she launched Gabriela Hearst in 2015, fusing the values of enduring utilitarian beauty learned on the ranch with her reality as a professional woman seeking practical elegance in her daily life in New York.
Gabriela is committed to creating a brand that is as strong and modern in its ethics and values as it is in its aesthetics. It tells the story of the places that she loves and made her who she is: Uruguay and New York. Pieces are designed to stand the test of time and hold memories for the woman who wears them. She is a real woman, alluring and powerful, leading a life of action. These clothes are her uniform, her armor.
Gabriela’s vision of sustainable luxury means each garment is impeccably constructed and made with noble, conscientious materials, including silk, cashmere, linen and wool from her family’s ranch, which her father left in her care in 2011. Gabriela also uses biodegradable Tipa packaging, is committed to being plastic-free and is investing in zero waste stores. To learn more about the brand’s sustainability efforts, click here.

In 2018, she was appointed to the board of trustees of Save the Children.
In early 2019, LVMH Luxury Ventures, an investment arm of LVMH, took a minority stake in Gabriela Hearst, making it the only American brand other than Marc Jacobs in which the global luxury conglomerate is invested.
Gabriela lives in New York with her husband Austin Hearst and their three children, Mia, Olivia and Jack.
Gabriela attended the British School in Montevideo and studied Communications at the O.R.T. University of Uruguay. After more than a decade spent in design in New York, Gabriela honored her family’s heritage through the launch of her eponymous label in Fall 2015, as well as taking over the operations of her father’s ranch in Uruguay. Gabriela wanted to create a brand that reflects a slower pace and process: where things are made with care and detail, where tradition is more important than trend, where there is a purpose to every piece. Gabriela’s commitment is to make a strong and modern collection without compromising her ethics and key values, taking into consideration where materials come from and who is making them: luxury with a conscience or in other words, “honest luxury”. Each garment is an item into which Gabriela can pour her desire—made with impeccable construction and uncompromising, noble materials. Together, they tell a story of the places she loves that made her who she is: Uruguay and New York. Combining the utilitarian and the beautiful, she wanted to design long-lasting garments that hold memories for the woman who wears them. She is a real woman, alluring and powerful, but there is much action in her life and these clothes are her uniform, her armor. She launched in 2016 her Nina Bag which started as a limited edition series bag and now has an extensive waiting list.
