An Inside Look at our New York Store

Gabriela Hearst opened her first flagship store in November 2018 at 985 Madison Avenue in New York City, inside the Carlyle House, between 76th and 77th Streets.

The store is a manifestation of Gabriela’s vision and showcases in equal parts her refined taste and her sustainability mission, without the intimidating nature of most high-end boutiques. Instead, she opted for a warm and inviting environment, complete with white cashmere walls and marble damier floors that add to the store’s understated luxury.

This is the first store on Madison built consciously, without synthetics or chemicals, using natural and non-treated reclaimed oak, complete with built-in light occupancy sensors throughout the space to reduce electrical consumption and a filtered water fountain that eliminates the need for plastic bottles. 90% of the material waste generated during the construction process was recycled.

Everything in the boutique was chosen with purpose, whether to create a feeling of refined comfort or to tie back to brand and family signatures.

On the silk- and cashmere-wool-lined walls there’s a quilt made by Hearst’s husband Austin’s great-grandmother Phoebe Apperson Hearst in the late 1800s that previously hung in her daughters’ room. The quilt bears the herringbone pattern that is one of Gabriela Hearst’s most recognizable motifs, consistently used in her collections, as well as on seating and leather storage pieces in the store.

The women’s and men’s ready-to-wear collections are displayed in the front of the store, with shoes and a dedicated room for an extensive selection of handbags, sold exclusively in Gabriela’s stores and online shop, toward the back.

Just before customers reach a door leading directly to the Carlyle, there’s a floor-to-ceiling console stocked with products by Buly, the 18th-century French beauty apothecary recently resurrected by the husband-and-wife team Ramdane Touhami and Victoire de Taillac.
